On May 5 the new RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre held its opening ceremony in an event attended by around 1000 people including members of the USAF’s 95th Reconnaissance Squadron.
The USAF squadron currently operates primarily from RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, though at one time resided at RAF Sculthorpe in Norfolk.
In its long history RAF Sculthorpe hosted USAF nuclear bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. In its heyday, around 10,000 people worked at the base, however the US vacated the site in 1992.
The Heritage Centre was previously at the Wicken Green Rural Center at RAF Sculthorpe, and it has now moved to a nearby building on the base – a move marked by the May 5 opening ceremony.
The RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre is only open certain days of the year, more information can be found at www.rafsculthorpeheritagecentre.org
