The Australian hub has initiated new schemes to improve environmental impacts and sustainability

Perth Airport believes that expanding its renewable energy usage will move it closer to its new aspiration to be CO2 neutral by 2030.

The hub’s carbon neutrality commitment is incorporated into an Environment, Social, People and Governance (ESPG) scheme which sets targets for the workforce to follow.

“Perth Airport is focussed on delivering economic, social and cultural benefits by keeping the people of Western Australia connected to the rest of the nation and the world,” said Kevin Brown, Perth Airport CEO.

“We have emphasised the ‘people’ element within ESPG to encompass not only our own team but to recognise that we serve the people of Western Australia and look to meet their expectations on responsibly and sustainably managing our operations.”

Brown also reiterates the airport’s promise to manage and reduce its environmental impact.

He added: “We continue to manage our own carbon emissions through the Airport Carbon Accreditation process run by Airports Council International. We all need to be a part of the solution and we are already laying the groundwork that will set us on the path toward our own operations becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”

Alongside the new environmental commitments, the airport has also adopted a ‘no net loss of biodiversity’ pledge for aviation and development projects. Within this promise, Perth has outlined the importance of preserving the Munday Swamp wetland and indigenous heritage area.

“We will embed sustainability considerations into the design and delivery of all infrastructure projects at Perth Airport by setting minimum requirements in key areas of sustainability,” explained Brown.

Safety and diversity are also described as crucial to the success of the hub’s future, as the CEO labels these factors as the site’s “top priority” with plans to inaugurate a “hidden disabilities programme” in the near future to help cater to all needs.
