Philippines rotary revolution continues

The first two of a planned six T129B ‘Atak’ helicopters will be delivered to the Philippines in September this year the country’s Department of National Defense (DND) has announced.

According to the government-run Philippine News Agency the total contract price for the six helicopters will be $269.3m, which will be produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries through a government-to-government agreement between Turkey and the Philippines.

A further two units are expected to be delivered in February 2022, with the final two platforms arriving in the Philippines in February 2023.

In February this year the Philippines also approved the acquisition of an additional 15 Black Hawk helicopters to improve airlift capacity within the Philippine Air Force (PAF), although the DND had sought up to 55 platforms to meet its requirements and replace the ageing UH-1H ‘Huey’ in service.

The PAF already operates 16 S-70i Black Hawk helicopters ordered in 2019 in an effort to modernise its rotary fleet.
