San Diego Widens its Horizons
Sebastian Schmitz discovers a record-breaking facility, giving a ‘small airport’ experience, in southern California. Consolidated Aircraft, later Convair, built aircraft at San Diego from 1933 until the manufacturer was dissolved by parent company General Dynamics in 1994. All photos author Lindbergh Field is a name locals sometimes still use when referring to San Diego International Airport. But this facility is no ‘field’. It is only minutes from ‘Downtown’, the shores of the Pacific Ocean and numerous natural and cultural attractions.
