SAS steps closer to SkyTeam with Atlanta announcement

SAS has added a new route connecting Copenhagen with Atlanta to its summer 2024 programme.

The daily service will commence on June 17 becoming the airline’s ninth North American destination. SAS will utilise its three-class, 266-seat Airbus A330-300s on the route.

In addition to the new destination, SAS will also increase frequencies on several other routes to the US. This includes Copenhagen-New York/JFK, which will have up to two daily flights. Copenhagen-Boston will increase to daily, from six weekly, during the summer, and a fourth weekly rotation will be added between Copenhagen and Toronto.

Atlanta – the world’s busiest airport – is a key hub for Delta Air Lines, with whom SAS will soon join forces as part of the Delta-Air France-KLM-Virgin Atlantic revenue-sharing partnership on transatlantic flights. SAS is also set to join the SkyTeam alliance, leaving Star Alliance, which it helped establish in 1997. This comes after the Air France-KLM group announced it would purchase a 19.9% non-controlling stake in the Stockholm-based airline.

SAS CEO Anko van der Werff said: “Through an agreement with Delta Air Lines, passengers can continue their journey on other Delta-served destinations out of Atlanta. This development means an expanded offering for SAS passengers, who can look forward to reaching several new and exciting destinations across the Southern USA, Caribbean, and Latin America, all conveniently accessible from Atlanta.”
