The ‘Candy Bomber’ Gail Halvorsen has passed away aged 101
Colonel Gail Seymour Halvorsen, better known as 'The Candy Bomber', has died at the age of 101. Halvorsen, who was also affectionately known as ‘Uncle Wiggly Wings’, ‘The Chocolate Uncle’ and ‘The Chocolate Flier’ helped drop over 23 tons of sweets to children during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-1949. Halvorsen joined the US Air Force in 1942 and was assigned to Germany to take part in the airlift in July 1948, flying C-47s and C-54s as part of Operation Vittles.
