This is the highest number of travellers passing through US airports since the beginning of the pandemic

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened more than two million travellers on Friday (June 11).

This marked the first time that more than two million individuals passed through airport security checkpoints since March last year – representing 74% of passenger volumes since the same period in 2019.

“The growing number of travellers demonstrates this country’s resilience and the high level of confidence in COVID-19 counter measures, to include ready access to vaccines,” said Darby LaJoye, senior official performing the duties of the TSA Administrator. “TSA stands ready to provide a safe and secure screening process as part of the overall travel experience.”

Pre-pandemic, more than two million passengers were screened by the agency every day. The lowest level of 87,534 customers was recorded on April 13 last year.

By the middle of last month, the average daily volume had recovered to around 65% of levels seen before the coronavirus crisis.
