Tuskegee Airmen remembered in Italy

A new memorial to the airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group has been unveiled on the site of their former base

From May 28 1944 until May 4, 1945, the famous Tuskegee Airmen – comprised of African American aviators – was based at Ramitelli airfield in Italy. The group, which included the 99th, 100th, 301st and 302nd Fighter Squadrons (USAAF), flew with distinction in the Mediterranean theatre.

The airfield no longer exists, but the memorial is sited close to its location, in Nuova Cliternia, a district of Campomarino, near the Adriatic Sea. The area formerly occupied by Ramitelli airfield was returned to farmland after the war ended.

The unveiling of the new memorial stone took place on Sunday July 16. With thanks to Gian Spagnoletti
