Vienna Airport passenger decline continues

The hub experienced almost a 90% drop in travellers last month alongside the Malta and Kosice

Vienna Airport is still facing an ongoing decline in passenger traffic, with traveller numbers dropping by 86.1% in May this year compared to 2019 figures.

The Flughafen Wien Group – consisting of the Austrian hub, Malta and Kosice – recorded an 86.7% decrease in customers after serving 479,198 individuals last month.

The number of local passengers dropped by 88.6%, with transfer travellers falling by 77.3%. Flight movements also decreased last month by 76.2% compared with the same period in 2020.

In May, cargo volume declined at the Austrian hub by 7.8% compared with last year.

Passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe dropped by 86.7% last month, with similar figures reported to North America (89.9%) compared with pre-crisis levels. Traveller numbers to Middle Eastern destinations also declined by 84.7% in the same period.

Similarly, Malta also recorded a decline in passenger volume (88.8%) in May this year, with Kosice also experiencing an 89.1% drop.
