The modernisation of Terminal 1 is expected to enhance customer experience whilst optimising operational efficiency

Global airport operator, VINCI and financial services group, Orix have begun Kansai International’s Terminal 1 upgrade – the largest works at the hub since its opening in 1994.

With the modernisation project commencing in 2016, the reconstruction is operating in line with Japan’s strategy of expanding tourism and economic development within the region.

Creating more capacity, enhancing operational efficiency and improving the passenger experience without needing to build an entirely new terminal are the main aims of the project. This helps optimise space whilst meeting VINCI Airports’ environmental objectives, according to the company.

The hub’s international route is set to have a complete redesign, including security checks, boarding, emigration, commercial areas and arrivals.

By implementing a new walkway, it is hoped that the infrastructure of the building – designed by Italian architect, Renzi Piano – will be highlighted. Alongside this, new technologies are expected to optimise the flow of passengers and improve the overall experience.

The works – which are supported by the Japanese government – are predicted to take around four years to complete.
