Vought F7U-3 Cutlass to undergo major restoration

Vought F7U-3 Cutlass 129685 is to be the subject of a major restoration project at the Military Aircraft Preservation Society (MAPS) Air Museum at Akron Canton Regional Airport Ohio.

Taken on strength by the US Navy in September 1954, the Cutlass served with VF-81, VA-66 and VA-12 before eventually being struck off charge during 1962. It was then transferred to the Walter Soplata Aviation Collection in Newsbury, Ohio, where it remained until being acquired by MAPS last November.

This unusual, tailless aircraft is now in poor condition and will require extensive refurbishment. After MAPS personnel have completed work on two exhibits currently in their restoration hangar, attention will turn to the new arrival.
