Happy Birthday RAF Driffield – 75 years old today – not gone, but forgotten by an uncaring nation…… You were also a friend to countless airmen, some of whom left your runways never to return.

Forgotten by an uncaring Nation? What about the local Cemetery and Cemeteries across the Nation and all of Europe in which these countless airmen lie? What about Runnymede? The airfield means nothing now. Is it not a fitting tribute that those men who fought and died should see their old base returned to a more useful purpose? Be it housing, or as in the case of Fradley, as a warehousing and distribution centre providing much needed employment?

I think we need to get priorities right. Let’s face it, for most of those who survived into peacetime, all they wanted to do was forget about the war and get on with their lives. It is important to remember that those men fought and in many cases died, not to write a chapter in history, but to secure a future.

The airmen of Driffield will never be forgotten, nor will the airmen of countless other Bomber, Fighter, Coastal, Training and Transport Command that have either returned to nature, to agriculture or been otherwise absorbed into the infrastructure of the Nation.
