In keeping with many UK airports Leeds Bradford International airport started life as a local flying club based at Yeadon in 1931. The first schedule flights commenced in 1935 to Newcastle and Edinburgh by North Eastern airways and to the Isle of Man by West Coast air Services.

All civilian flights ceased in 1939 due to the start of the Second World War. The Avro factory next to the aerodrome built over 4500 planes including the famous Lancaster, Anson and York.

After the war, flights began again in 1947 and in 1953 the flying club was incorporated to form Yeadon Aviation Ltd. In 1959 this became the Leeds Bradford Airport Joint Committee.
