Would it have been safer to land with engines off? Or is it safer to power in? That gives more control but also more fire danger? Tough decision to make. What do they teach in emergency training on this point? Flip a coin?

Much easier to do what you know and do a power on landing, and the cut the engines over the threshold. A power off landing would be a less familiar situation, which would be a lot easier to make a pigs ear of and potenially not land safely at all.:)
