I wondered why the Mustang shut down beside the runway.
”Frankie’s landing gear problem at The Goodwood Revival on Sunday evening.
We landed safely at Duxford following a right hand gear problem immediately after takeoff at Goodwood.
The problem with the right leg was immediately apparent and inspected in the air by Lee Proudfoot in Spitfire MH434. As we had plenty of fuel it was decided to land on a long into wind tarmac runway, rather than the bumpier grass and cross-wind at Goodwood, so Duxford was the ideal choice.
During the slow transit (with the gear down) the right fuel tank was run down low to reduce the weight on that wheel, whilst there was over 90 minutes fuel left in the other tank. All was ok on landing, which was at the lowest speed possible and, as a precaution, the engine was switched off as soon as the wheels touched; the gear held and nothing at all was damaged! The undercarriage was found to be secure and Frankie was carefully towed to the hangar.
There is no damage and as soon as a replacement part arrives it will be quickly put right.
Many thanks for all your concerns.”
