I’m just back from a trip to lanzarote and I put my camera equipment into my briefcase because it is EXACTLY the maximum dimensions stated. I usually use a Lowepro mini-trecker but no way was I risking having to put it into the hold.

Having said that I did see people with quite large small bags ( if you see what I mean ). I guess it depends on the individual security staff you come across.
