MOSCOW – Alitalia did not place a defitinive order for the Sukhoi Superjet 100. That announcement was made by Sukhoi. In the recently published annual report published by Sukhoi it said Alitalia had ordered 20 planes. “A mistake”, the company says in an official statement.
According to Sukhoi Alitalia should not have been listed as a customer for the regional airliner. Whether the Italian airline, 25% owned by KLM/Air France, has an interest in the Superjet is something Sukhoi won’t comment on. On the 19th of July the bi-annual Farnborough air show will start. Sukhoi promised they would announce more news on the SSJ-100 there.
With an order for the Superjet Alitalia would have been the first large western customer for Sukhoi. At the moment Sukhoi has sold 123 Superjets.
The potential interest from Alitalia for the SSJ is easily explained. The Italian aviation industry is closely involved with the development of the SSJ. Earlier ItAli Airlines already ordered 10 Superjets.
