no, just what’s going to the Hold. it then goes down the conveyor belt as if you’d checked in at the desk, without keeping everyone behind you waiting as you show your passport, they go through the computer to find your reservation, ask the security questions, print the boarding pass and luggage tags. it’s really just a case of dropping the bag off, leaving you free to clear through security faster (although depending how many self service kiosks there are, you may have to queue to access them, though).

Having said that, not all self service machines provide luggage tags, some airlines you still need to get them printed out at the bagage drop, although you just have to show your Boarding pass rather than go through the whole rummage-in-your-bag-for-your-ticket charade.

With BA, for example, I haven’t even had to swipe my credit card through, just putting my Exec Club card through the reader has brought up my booking details (provided, obviously, you gave them your Exec Club number when you made the booking, or subsequently added it online)
