417018 Warrant Officer Stanley Edgar Smith

The son of Fritz and Ethel Smith and husband of Vera, of Colonel Light Gardens, South Australia, Warrant Officer Smith was an Australian. He joined 609 at B.91 Kluis under S/Ldr Stark in March 1945. On 23rd April whilst flying Typhoon PD572 PR-D he took of from B.103 Plantlunne at 14:35hrs on DD639, a shipping strike. The attack was led by Group Captain Baldwin and intense light flak was encountered at Delfzil. Warrant Officer Smiths Typhoon was hit and he was seen to be losing height in a turn. As the Typhoon burst into flames the pilot was seen to bale out, but he was too low for the parachute to deploy and he was Killed in Action. The aircraft crashed near Niewolda and he is buried at Nieuw-Scheemda Protestant Churchyard.
