Contrast that operation with the one which sunk the Tirpitz in WW2. 12,000lb bombs from over two miles up. It didn’t matter how much armour the ship had, with a direct hit from a Tallboy it was going all the way through.

Now the worry is the rumoured Chinese anti-carrier missile which renders nearly all the ship’s defences obsolete and hits it with pin-point precision from hundreds of miles away. With such weapons I wouldn’t be surprised if they stopped building carriers – until the next leap in technology is invented to counter it, of course.
