Titanic has a certain resonance – our house is the family home of the Chief Engineer Joseph Bell and where he was born and grew up before his apprenticeship at Stephenson’s Engine works in Newcastle. It has taken several years to prove to the Titanic authorities that his birthplace of Whitehaven was incorrect. He is remembered on his mothers gravestone in the local churchyard. A small group of us had the inscription restored for the centenary.
