May be wrong here and hoping that Mark12 will be able to assist on this one, would not the merlin 45 have a smaller engine bearer and cowlings more suited to the MkV than the merlin 66 which was originally fitted to the MkVIIII which I believe had a slightly longer bearer and cowlings.

I think the owner, at that time, had a Merlin 45 either secured or in sight and proposed to fit it to a ‘long’ engine bearer if he could not obtain a Merlin 66.
