A Jenny would have been a bit too new and expensive.

 

A Curtiss pusher would have been more common.

If he is mechanically minded, you could say he engineered some minor changes to it, as they were common in the unregulated days.

If he was a student of the Wright organization, his ship would of had Wright-type controls, very different from other, more common arrangements.
