I have several PNG maps from ca. 30 years ago but they are covered in corrections which themselves need correcting!
One thing I remember from my time there:
I flew into Karimui, Chimbu Province (now known as Simbu) in a Cessna in 1979 and noticed the pilot consulting his chart (so they were avail;able then).
I asked him how one of the mountains was named on said chart – Mount Udon – as I had seen it delineated thus on one of my Geological maps. Sure enough, there it was. The only problem was that the name was wrong as it was known to the people who lived by it as Mount “Oh” (I’ve never seen it written down so can only give it phonetically). As this particular mountain is quite high (ca.13000ft) it seemed rather important to have it named correctly. He made the necessary change on his chart and said he would pass on the information and I often wonder whether he did?
Tell your friend to consult Air Niuginea orTalair for info on latest charts. They are pretty important kit!
