1/144 Scale USAAF Airfield ( Part of a customer's model railway )

Prompted by the other model railway/airfield thread, I’ve got some pictures to share of part of a railway I am building for a customer. The railway is set around 1943, and has lots of small military scenes around it. The airfield is on section 4, but here’s the first three sections. The airfield goes to the left of the 8 feet long Country Station section ( closest to the trailer ). There is a quayside with a Destroyer being repaired in dry dock, and a Liberty ship unloading military supplies.

A general view of the Lancaster crash showing the rescue crews and vehicles.

This is another animated scene. Here’s an early test of the smoke system. It is meant to represent the steaming engine as a result of the fire fighting foam.

That’s about up to date.

The “Follow Me” Jeep is leading a visiting P-38 fighter to an available dispersal. In the background, and RAF Lancaster has made an emergency landing.

The crash crew was quickly on the scene, and the RAF crew escaped unharmed.

The right end of the hangar has an Air Sea Rescue Catalina in it. To have been in the hangar, it must have dropped into this airfield with a major problem. This scene is motorized so the Jeep appears to tow the aircraft in and out.

Here’s an early test of the Catalina mechanism.

At the hangar, the Station Hack C-47 transport plane is unloading some cargo, but appears to have had a problem with the port engine. Mechanics are already starting work to sort the problem.

Another GMC truck is waiting to take the C-47 cargo away.

Near the hangar, several ground crew are salvaging parts from the “Hangar Queen”. A GMC truck waits near by to carry the parts to the aircraft in need.

The detailing and project isn’t over yet, so the following pictures aren’t fully complete scenes. There may be details to still add, touch ups to do, matt coats to spray to hide the glue holding figures down etc. So without any further prattling from me, on to the pictures.

A B-17 crew are about to go for a local familiarization flight having just arrived in the back of a CCKW 353 truck. A dodge WC62 is parked at the front as the ground crew make final preparations.
