As a tribute to a late friend, below are pictures of his 1/8th scale Hawker Hurricane model. It’s currently on display at the Sun and Fun museum in Florida.

Dave unfortunately did not finish his model before he passed away.
Unbelievably most of the model is constructed from cookie sheets, Dave said that they were nice and thin and easy to work. Built entirely with simple hand tools in a bedroom of his appartment!!!!!!
Not content with the bolts and nuts that he could source being overscale, Dave used to file their faces down to scale in his jewelers lathe (vise).
We never discussed how he constructed the Packard Merlin, it too is a miniature work of art.
Fantastic retirement project for those with limited finances but unlimited enthausiam. It was a joy to correspond with Dave over the years.

Yes it is a lovely model. Dave’s aim was to replicate the external and internal details of the hurricane right down to the rivit. And speaking of rivits he had quite a tough time finding them in 1/8th scale.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – aye carumba! 😮
That’s right up there with the 1/5th scale Spitfire posted recently in the “brilliant” stakes! 🙂
