hi guys,
trying to find a close up of the badge worn by the camouflaged jet provost at Brawdy TWU, from what i can make out it is an unofficial badge and looks like a crossed sword and torch:confused:
also what is that written at the top of the fin and rudder

On the 2nd pic on this link there is a (faded) paint spec stencil…

As Baloffski posted – the lettering on fin/rudder would probably be paint spec info…I would guess that it would say something like DTD5580A at that time (Polyurethane topcoat)
rgds baz
edit…I think a/c also had the paint manufacturer stencilled with the DTD number,ISTR some a/c being stencilled ‘Titanine’

I have a large image file of the TWU crest which I will happily email you if you PM me your email address?
Bizzarely I also have the original metal stencil set for applying this same crest 🙂
Having worked on these JP’s at Brawdy for some years, I can’t remember what or if they had stencilled lettering on the fin – even my extensive photo archive can’t confirm that either?
With regards to who the JP’s were allocated to – welll they were based at Brawdy under the FAC (Forward Air Control) remit under JFACTSU. Flown by 79 Sqn crew as and when tasked. I am still in touch with one particular pilot of ours who flew our JP’s more than most….

For some reason I think the stencilling on the fin is the paint specification, but that is based on nothing more than 30 odd year old memory. I also seem to recall the JPs weren’t TWU assets but belonged to the Forward Air Controller School.

It’s the TWU crest, based on the preceeding 229 OCU one.

229:
Not sure about the writing – looks like stencilling, but is not apparent on a pic of the same aircraft taken a year later in 83.
