Ten years ago the first A300-600St Beluga his first flight
The A300-600ST programme was launched in 1991 to replace the Super-Guppies used to transport aircraft components between its European sites as early as 1974. The programme involved converting the popular A300-600 into an oversized freighter aircraft, relocating the cockpit below the aircraft’s main deck level to allow for easy roll-on, roll-off for cargo. The result was the world’s most voluminous aircraft and the only aircraft capable of carrying loads up to seven metres in height. To date, the fleet of five Belugas has clocked up 24,000 flight hours and on average accumulates close to 300 flight hours each month transporting aircraft components for Airbus and delivering some more unusual items during third party charter flights.
