1,000 posts special-Where are you all from?

This was posted around a year ago I think, but seeing that in the few months the forum has become very popular with alot of new members joining it might be relevant to bring this up again.
So where is everybody from?
For anyone who doesn’t know I am from Guernsey,Channel Islands.Definately one of the most beautiful places in the British Isles and hottest! It is very popular with tourists in the summer season which makes the airport very busy with flights from mainly the UK and the Benelux regions and Germany.Beautiful scenery, lovely weather and very friendly people make the island a great place to live. What about where you live?

RE: weston super mud

studying plankton just doesnt do it for me, and their aint much biology in the waters around here!! I believe that the vet school here is quite good- again not my thing, the birds they have there fly too slowly!

RE: weston super mud

Wish I was at uni in Bristol, they have a vet school at least, which is far better than marine biology.

weston super mud

JA you leave weston super mud alone its a lovely place lol!! very many chippies run by very non british people, along with the arcades which are really cool!!

weston, as rabie was surely trying to say, was also a victorian town, and many places such as scarborough and weston super mare were very popular victorian holidaying resorts-hence the extensive piers etc etc- how else would places like scarborough and bognor regis get into folk lore!!

I have only ever seen the sea up at weston super mare ONCE and that was at 2.30 in the morning. The sea bed is soo flat it goes out an awful long way, and then comes back an awful long way pretty fast.

other than that binoculars should suffice.

I am currently living in Bristol, not my home town, whilst slogging through university.

I am from Oudenaarde, which is in the East Flanders region of Belgium. My town is well known for the beer industry, we have several breweries, with Roman and Liefmans being the most famous. The best local beer is Sloeber. You would like it here Comet:-)

RE: 1,000 posts special-Where are you all from?

Rather Koksijde than Scarborough Geforce. Scarborough is HORRID!!!!!!!!!! Shops closed down and left empty and derelict for years. Soon our last town centre supermarket is to close and be replaced by a hardware store. Many hotels have closed down and been converted into hostel accommodation for criminals and drug addicts. The buses stop here at 6pm, the train service is pathetic. In summer the streets reek of vomit, especially on a hot day. If I wasn’t unfortunate enough to live in this vile pathetic excuse for a town I would never visit it or come anywhere near it.

Okay, lets agree that we both live in great places!

The IOM is similar; slightly larger populace (75,000-ish) but much less densely populated. Similar tradition with pubs, but those outside Douglas are the type where locals read “What Tractor” or “What Combine” whilst chewing a bit of straw and they stare at strangers. Someone from Jersey once told me that St. Helier is like Douglas, except in St. Helier they paint the buildings!

From Santiago de Compostela (St James Shrine), Northwest of Spain.
But don´t get confused guys….no sun, no bullfighting (puajjjj),
no paella, tortilla, Sangria, flamenco or all that touristical things. It´s like Scotland or Ireland, green landscape, windpipes, fair people, lakes and magical legends. Come over….

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-03-02 AT 01:53 PM (GMT)]Sorry I misunderstood what you were saying I apologise.I don’t have a clue about the financial industry over here so just forget what i said about criminal activity.
Anyway on a lighter note Guernsey is described as 60,000 alcholics hanging on a rock,we have over 30 pubs and many more restraunts serving the finest ale and Guernseys own brew Mary Ann.Many people who come over can not believe the amount of alchole the Guernsey people consume! :7

RE: 1,000 posts special-Where are you all from?

Hey man, I wasn’t being literal!

Jersey and Guernsey are both beautiful places, and no offence was intended. It’s health rivalry, that’s all. My job involves anti-money laundering measures (I’m an accountant) and the press and outside agencies always measure the IOM against JER and GCI.

Equally ill thought out is your assertion of the predominance of criminal activity in the offshore centres. This is very rare, and in terms of laundering criminal money, London is the leading centre in Europe!! Even on a proportional basis, the offshore centres are “clean”. The bulk of the business is gained either because wealthy people wish to protect their assets from others (ie. place in in trust instead of using a will. Wills can be contested; trusts cant) or because companies see no reason to pay any more tax than they have to. Are you telling me you find this objectionable or ruinous of your island?

I’d be happy to deabate the workings of offshore finance with you but in the spirit of this forum, lets let this one lie for now.

RE: 1,000 posts special-Where are you all from?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-03-02 AT 09:44 PM (GMT)]The finance industry in the channel islands is a joke i admit Mongu.Every time i walk around St.Peter Port i am amazed at the number of new finance buisness that is moving in.St.Helier in Jersey in even worse!I don’t no much about off shore finance centres but all i know is that it is full of criminal activity andits ruining the true beauty and character of the channel Islands.
Anyway i really don’t see how you can say the IOM in way ahead of GCI and JER based on those two facts.Me and you Mongu are very fortunate to live on such beautiful islands where we don’t exactley see the rubbish that occurs on the mainland with crime, public services, pollution ect.So i do not think that saying that the IOM is way ahead of the C.I is a well thought out statmement,do you?

It’s better in that there are no speed limits and that we were a bit quicker to get off the FATF grey list! Also there’s less unpronouncable bits of french to deal with!!

Blackpool’s a nice place, I go there a lot. Although I do spend all my time in the Empress Ballroom in the WinterGardens or inside the Blackpool Tower. Do any of you notice though, that it always seems to be raining in Blackpool.

RE: 1,000 posts special-Where are you all from?

cool – that’s a wide range of a/c – me and benair were talking to a B757 captain in December and he said that he was only checked for the 757 and 767 – howcome u got such a wide range – surely they’d keep the 757/767 pilots together, and the Airbus series together?
