Well, when the Luftwaffe secretly allowed Bader to come back to Britain for more surgery to his legs they lent him an Me 109. Out of fuel and lost somewhere near the Wirral (he had long range tanks because the standard 109 F didnt have the legs) he baled out. Later, he was given the 109 canopy he had dumped before he jumped and he realised this would make a handy bed cradle to keep the sheets from irritating his stumps when he was staying at the Stork Hotel. During the day it doubled as a bediside table and, later, a feature coffee table in the guest lounge. I thought everyone knew that story? :diablo:

Andy

That story is word perfect, I know this as my Grandad managed to purchase one of Baders legs at the same time during his stay, apparently he needed another Beer and had run out of cash. Is anyone interested in purchasing the leg???:diablo:

Legless – Who me?!!!

Perhaps TimeTeam could do a dig in “Nick’s” garden for other aviation esoterica related to legless aces who allegedly lurked about in Liverpool? 😀

Yes I can see it now….Location: Nick’s garden… Tony speaks: ….and you think his Me109 glided this far after he bailed out? 50 miles is a long way you know! Nick replies: Well it must be true… here’s the canopy I found used as a cloche when we moved in (quickly hides the eBay invoice taped to it):dev2:

Now I do have an old MG in the garage, hand painted RAF blue and reputedly formerly belonging to a well know RAF officer – I am sure with a bit of constructive research (such as many eBay sellers seem to be experts at), a suitable provenance could be arranged! 😮

I also have lots of pots of paint!!! :dev2:

I may be interested in the can of paint, but it depends on how many other forum members have actually owned it?;)

Before anyone invests in the can of paint, I think you should get it checked out to make sure it’s the right shade. I believe there are a number of people on this forum who could help, one in particular regularly advises Corgi on their paint jobs and should be the man for this job.

Drat, I thought it was my week to own the canopy… looks like I’ll need to sort that with the poster of that advertisement. 😉

The story for the canopy I had which looks kind of familiar to this one, was it was a relic from Russia with no history whatsoever,

Now was this the same Hospitial on the Wirral, were burned aircrew went to be given treatment and then a new identity after being reported lost so they would not have to face their families.

I have a newspaper cutting somewhere claiming this story to be true.
