looks like I have hit the jackpot. From one moment to the other my 1 week old 10D stopped with its autofocus. Everything else is workin, but only the AF is WFU. Anyone a guess what’s wrong? Lousy moment as in a few hours I leave for Chambley in France. It is the camera, as the lenses all work on my 1V. BW Roger

Well, I contacted Canon CPS this afternoon and I must bring the camera to them as it must be repaired by Canon themselves. Hope I have it back before 9/8. BW Roger

Damien,
Well he went into the computer and said there is a backlog of 600 – maybe he was playing Minesweeper – but he said he would put my name down for one, no obligation to buy, but he did not have a date when it would be in.
He definately mentioned the reason as being Canon having to re-chip the 10D.
I must admit to not seeing any 10D’s in town when I have looked.
But maybe it was the wife dragging me away from the shop windows by the ear that accounts for that 😉

I still have my Dad’s first Practica, an L2 of the middle 60s, which works perfectly. My Practica EE2 of 1978 or so worked when it felt like it.
After a couple of years or so I gave up and bought an Olympus OM-2N which is still working perfectly 20 odd years later. The digital equivalent has just been announced. $2199 plus lenses. I’m not expecting to change until after I receive my telegram from the Queen. (Fat chance, she’d be 126)

I still have my first Practica, a Super TLS of 1976 !. Well, the 10D is down, but the others were still working:D 😀

Isn’t it better to work with a 30 year old Practica than with Lglass on a not working Canon?
Roger, for just a fraction of a second i actually bought into this and felt myself in a better photographic situation then you… 😉
My Practicas all broke down, so you’re not really alone. I know a broken Practica is in a different leage as a broken 10D though…

@ Snapper
Isn’t it better to work with a 30 year old Practica than with Lglass on a not working Canon?
I bought them one by one, and the most expensive ones second hand. The moment a new lens is introduced, the “old” ones are realy bargained. Optained my 300/2.8 for less than 1200 (which I realise is still very expensive, but I am partly earning my money with taking photographs for a variety of mags in Holland and Europe, so it is justified a bit) when the IS model came (and then I broke my elbow and since I can hardly hold it anymore :mad:).
About my camera, Thursday evening I bought my BG-ED3 grip, and the problems started Friday. Might there be a connection between the grip and the problems( without the pack, with the battery in the “normal” position, the problem remains)? I checked all my lenses, and it is the same, so it is realy camera related. Maybe the trouble is with the small “golden” connection pins in the camera, may be dirty or corroded, but how do I “clean” those without damaging?

“I only have Lglass, all 2,8 “
I hate you! Grrrr!

@Snapper
No, I have no Sigma lenses. I only have Lglass, all 2,8 , so that can’t be the problem. The camera is giving both error 99 aswell as error 01. I go to CPS on monday. It works fine when the AF switch is off (in MF) , but as soon as the AF switch is on, it is gone, frozen in oneshot mode and not working at all.
@Bob
I am not surprised if there is something wrong. Mine is a serial starting with 5, and I understand the problems are with the lower numbers, (except mine ofcourse). In spite of this, I can still recommend the camera, it is a great machine.
Just back from a 31 hour trip to France. I am signing off as I must go to bed now as I am deadly tired.

Re: 10D problems
Roger,
I just happened to call into my local Jessops to find out about delivery times on the 10D and the guy there said there was a backlog due to all the 10D’s having to be rechipped.
It sounds like there may have been a fault on the firsst load that went out.
Now whether this problem could affect the AF I don’t know.
May be worth while contacting your Canon dealer and finding out more.
Jessops has a backorder of 600 for customers – guess I’ll be having to wait a while………

Does the LCD say ‘err 99’ ? If so, the lens is not fully compatible (is it a Sigma? If so, send for rechipping). Bad luck old boy.

Tried cleaning the contact points on the body where the electrical connections between the body and the lens are established? Just a guess… Seems to be quite a few problems with this camera unfortunately, what with some Canon lenses needing adjustments to be used with it and dust in the camera? I wonder whether they are nowadays putting new cameras on the market before they have been sufficiently tested (i.e. like German car manufacturers do with their cars…. 😀 )
