Just ordered my 10D, have to pay 1650 Euro (around 1000 P.St) for it, which is “cheap” as “normal” price in Holland is around 2000-2100 Euro. Is it worth to buy that handgrip with it, together with an extra bat pack and the 1GB card?
I was thinking also of buying one of those small 20GB devices in which you can download your full flashcards while on a trip or holiday. Anybody has experience with this? BW Roger

Yes, IS is a big help. Bought it last year (for half the price of somebody who had depts (don’t go to the casino’s) and needed money. I had broken my elbow (took the f****** docters 5 months to find this out, and then it was to late and all the bones/muscle connections are a mess now) and I needed an IS lens to continue photographing as my normel gear was too heavy and had dropped out of my hands several times. Now things are better but especially on digital the lens works so great that I now take almost all the pics with it. BW Roger

Nice one Roger, you really need the IS out at 400mm though. A few more from Kemble (who would guess I have learnt how to post multiple images 😀 )

100-400L is a great lens. Used it all the time today. F-18 at Twenthe today. 400 mm (which due to the 1.6 enlargement of my digi is something of a 700 or so.

Thanks for the advice Damien , I saved a few bob and the camera/lense,case and batteries should be here on Monday , I bought the EF 24-85 f/3.5-4.5USM lense , compared to other retailers I saved over £280 , that’s a beer I owe you , if your ever up visiting EF drop me a mail and I’ll buy the lunch. I read your post on another thread about people asking you all the time about what equipment you used etc , so I appreciate you taking the time out to give me advice , I know all the money in the world won’t make me a great photographer but at least now I will have a decent set -up which should last me for a good few years .
David , if your brother is selling the EF 75-300mmf/4-5.6III how much is he asking for it , it is available very cheaply (as shown by Damien) and I wouldn’t want to offend him with a ludicrous offer .
Any other hints and tips from you professionals out there will gratefully received .
Many thanks

I use that lens and it’s a good air display unit for the less dedicated snapper like me . The reason I ask is that my brother has an Eos300 twin pack which he bought last year in Ibiza when
his Eos ‘something died’ and he might split the pack up and sell the lens for a reasonable sum because he doesn’t use the Eos300
-it’s only had two films through it!

The grip is called BGE-30, and it is normally sold with a second batterie, and a 1GB CF. I buy only the grip, and have obtained the CF card(s) from that firm Damien mentioned. It is also possible at another store he named to buy batterie packs at a much lower price that the original Canon ones.
I can not advise you on the lens, as I only have the 2.8 (expensive) ones. I also have a Canon 100-400L which is also expensive but is great. I always buy my lenses second hand now, so maybe that is an advise. Bw Roger

Printer cartridges are not a problem as I can get these from my employer FOC , the lense that “internetcamerasdirect”are offering is the EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III at £199 , is this what I’m looking for or are there better alternatives , also what is the part number for the grip ??? , I can’t find it on the above site ???

Don’t know if it is wise to print the photo’s on your own printer. Working this way is extremely expensive as you have to buy those terrible high priced colour cartidges more often than you like to know. If you let your 10 by 15 and the occasional enlargement print by a local photo shop your are working much more economical. If you realy want a printer, go for a Canon one as some of their printers have seperate colour cartridges, so you only have to replace the colour that is empty, not the other ones that are still filled. With conventional cartridges, you have to replace them when one colour ( eg blue) is empy, and you have to thrown away the others. (I think Epson also has seperate colour cartridges). A friend of mine has excellent results on a Canon 900 printer.
Other things you need, I shouldn’t know. Some extra CF cards are always a bonus, and keep in mind that the flash in the camera won’t help you much shooting aircraft. It can be used in a small room, or is good enough for cockpit shots. BW Roger

I’m clueless when it comes to cameras , I have a pissy wee Fuji Finepix 201 . I looked on internetcamerasdirect and they have the 10D for sale at £1299 and the zoom lens at £199 , what other accessories are classed as a must and what printer should I buy ??? , I know this is a pain is the a55 but I would appreciate ANY help – I want to buy one before the EF airshow on the 12th of July , many thanks.

Couldn’t wait till after my holiday. Just ordered a 512 card and a Xdrive II with 30 GB ( price difference between 20 & 30 was so small, and maybe one day I can get a second, third, forth hand Eos 1DS and then I can need some extra GBs ) from that firm in Australia. Hopes it will work out and arrive in Holland next week without a nasty interference by the Dutch customs. Thanks for the tip Damien. BW Roger

Thanks Damien. Going on holiday some 10 days from now, and hope that the 10D arrives before that. I went through the site of Powersinnumbers again, and their prices are indeed very low. For the price I pay for a 256, I can get a 512 there. As soon as I am back from my holiday in Spain, I am going to order some cards and the XDrive II 20GB from them. Thanks for the tip! BW Roger

Thanks for the advise everybody. I am going to order the handgrip. I have 5 256 cards, but as I have another digital camera, and I only intend to shoot in Tiff or RAW, I am afraid this isn’t enough for half a day of airshow work. So I also want a Xdrive now. Just checked the site of powerinnumbers, and found out that it is in Australia. Knowing the Dutch custums, this means that if I buy the Xdrive there, I must pay around 40% on inport taxes and VAT, or am I wrong in this? What type of Xdrive do you have Damien? And did you have to pay the UK costoms? BW Roger

Totally agree with Damien, go for the grip it balances the camera out nicely, and remember you can only take picyures if you have power and these batteries arent sold on stalls at airshows like good old AA’a are.
With CF cards follow the Chicken and eggs rule, you may be able to get a whole airshow on a 1gb disk, but what if it goes wrong.
Most importantly enjoy!!!.

Get the grip. Its sooooo much nicer. Get extra batteries too. I’m going for 4x 256mb CF cards, rather than 1 GB Microdrives (which I use at work) as they are motre robust, and I don’t want to keep all my eggs in one basket as it were.
