Thought I’d share this with you all. Never know one of these might be your ‘Grandad’!

Well it’s a Wellington all right. Probably with a faired over nose turret. So we can stop speculating about that:p
I’m not 100% certain, but I’d go with Wimpy too, … Two nose guns in shadow on ground …
😉

Digital Image of 120 Squadron
After finding this thread in the forums, it was great to see Peter Clare here.
Peter helped me out a long time ago, with some info on 120 Squadron, so that I could create some pictures. Two things have hindered my response to him.
1) My PC crashed and I lost all my archive material and email addresses…the lot.
2) The model I have had to work with is the B-24J, and I have limited ability in adding Side guns and Hard noses to the planes.
So with that in mind, here is the first in a series of pictures I am creating of 120 Squadron, but I ask you to forgive the incorrect model detail.
Hope you like it, there are two versions for download. one is 1280×1024, the other is wide-screen 1680×1050.

1280×1024 version:

That’s interesting.
Either it has been deleted from the AAM example, or I missed it. My assumption was that access was via the roller shutter bomb bay. A bit problematic in the event of a hydraulic failure though.
I’ll look more closely next time.

Oddly enough, checking the Lib in the US Museum at Dux reveals the fact that there is no entry hatch anywhere on a Liberator.
Moggy
Crew entered the Lib via a ‘trap door’ situated in the bottom of the rear fuselage, a ladder would be pulled down and the crew climbed in.

Is there an entry hatch there on the Liberator?

Is there any chance that this photo could have been taken at the BACK END of a Liberator, rather than the FRONT of a Wellington? Is there an entry hatch there on the Liberator?
No. It’s not a Lib. Having checked some Wimpy pics (The 4+ book’s excellent) it’s a Wimpy.

Good thought, but the venturi at the front discounts it. 😀

I’d be intrigued to find out Wessex
By: Wessex Fan - 7th February 2007 at 20:05
What are the clues?
Emma,
I must admit I am getting ready to be shot down on this one, but it has the feel of that part of the province, looking at the barely discernable background I am reminded of what you see when looking across Lough Foyle towards Donegal from a number of former World War II airfields in that general area.
I have copied the picture to a friend who is much more knowledgeable in this area than I am!
Cheers
Eric
Ps: The more I look at the picture, the more I am convinced that the picture was taken at one of the coastal airfields in the north of the province, the background just says Donegal to me!

The first shot is almost certainly N Africa; the men are on sand, the uniforms are appropriate for that theatre and not elsewhere (particularly the solar toupee or pith helmet) except further east, and there’s not a Malta horizon visible. Can’t be certain, but…

Emma,
I have a sneaking suspicion that the location is Ballykelly.

Another from Coastal Command. Sadly, no names, dates or location this time:(

Well, definitely a Liberator in that picture.
(Ignoring the extremely unlikely possibility that somebody has painted a Privateer in Coastal Command colours to confuse us.)
Moggy
Nah, those side inlets on the engines are the right way round for a Lib. They’re top and bottom rather than left and right on a Privateer.

Peter,
I will private message you with information.:D

Sadly must depart, just as things are hotting up! Children need collecting and feeding, though the temptation to leave them where they are is growing….:D
My return will provide further details for you Peter and some more crew pics with yet another aircraft, but this time I shall keep my mouth shut as to is ‘species’!!!

My guess is that this wasn’t taken at Reykjavik 😮
Now, here in Norfolk we have very nice weather, so I suppose Bircham is a possibility? 😀
Moggy
Could well have been in Malta or the Western Desert as the white paint of coastal command was too bright and the aircraft were “toned down”, to use an 80s expression.
But the fine Norfolk weather shouldn’t be discounted. Not that I’m biased…
