I have a query on 13 Group and 14 Group which I was wondering if someone could explain please? I was told that both 13 and 14 Group were responsible for the air defence of Scotland but it seems there must have been some kind of conflict of interest with two Groups controlling the same airspace? Was Scotland divided between the two for a period? Tied in with this I was wondering how the structure worked. Was a sector airfield responsible for all airfields in a region or only specific airfields dedicated to air defence? In other words could any airfield having fighter aircraft be called upon to launch aircraft in the event of an air attack or were there only dedicated squadrons at dedicated airfields nominated for this task?
Many Thanks

Scotavia – that was most helpful thank you. I don’t have the exact dates of the transfer of the Dyce and Wick Sectors to 14 Group so I have contacted Hendon. It makes since as I didn’t think it was possible for two Groups to control the same airspace.
