14 flying B-17's?

Let’s do the math, folks…I count 14 unless someone knows something I don’t-

David Tallichet’s ‘Memphis Belle’
Sally B (Ellie Sallingboe)
Pink Lady (French)
Thunderbird (Lone Star Flight Museum)
Aluminum Overcast (EAA)
Sentimental Journey (CAF)
Texas Raiders (CAF)
Shady Lady (Evergreen Air Museum)
Miss Angeline (Bob Pond)
Nine o’ Nine (Collings Foundation)
Killer Bee (Museum of Flying)
Fuddy Duddy (NWM)
Chuckie (Doc Hospers)
Yankee Lady (Yankee Air Museum)

And isn’t Weeks working on one, an E model, I think? I’m not sure if N17W, ‘Killer Bee’, is a flyer, but the late Bob Richardson left it in his will that the Museum of Flying should fly her, so I’m assuming she is?

Anyone know anymore I missed or that WILL be flyers but are being restored right now? The only 2 I have’nt seen are Killer Bee and Fuddy Duddy…seen all the rest (and rode in Shady Lady!)

If that is what it takes to get 7 B17’s in formation, then I say let every airfield build a new hangar. 🙂

Wings over Michigan

Lucky you going to Detroit to see 7 B17’s flying in Formation – that sounds very nice !!.I suppose they are doing that to raise money for a new hangar and parts at Willow Run – Yankee Air Force

The most I have seen together in one go was six (Mary Alice static) at DX during the filming of Memphis Belle.

I am so looking forward to Wings over Michigan! 🙂

I count eleven operational B-17s and two that are being returned to operational status via maintenance (Texas Raiders and Aluminum Overcast). Also, 21 static display airplanes, 4 being restored, and 6 in storage. Total of 44 complete airframes.

Check it out at http://www.aerovintage.com/b17loc.htm

RE: Flying B-17’s

Tom Reilly’s restoration is complete and was sucessfully test flown in Dec 2004. When restoration began it was to be “The Out House Mouse”, but in summer of 2004 (?), the plane was bought by Don Brooks of “Glacier Girl” fame – the P-38 Lightning lifted out of about 300-ft of ice on the east coast of Greenland – and the name changed to “Liberty Belle” of the 390th with the Box-J tail fin ID. Newer than the OHM, “Liberty Belle” is bare aluminum.

Don’s father served on the “Liberty Belle” I believe as a waist or tail gunner.

Pink Lady’s nominally airworthy, but I believe she’s having her spar bolts out and checked at the moment.

Outhouse Mouse is supposed to be flying sometime soon. Optimistic estimates are March / April, but they always seem to take longer don’t they.

B-17’s

Operationally active -17’s that I know of

“Nine O Nine”
“Sentimental Journey”
“Thunderbird”
“Sally B”
“Yankee Lady”
“Aluminum Overcast”
“Memphis Belle”
“Pink Lady”

“Texas Raiders” (CAF) Down for the count…for awhile

“Shady Lady” Not an active flyer

“Miss Angela” Very limited flying schedule

“Killer Bee” One more flight scheduled to the MOF

“Chuckie” recently made Airworthy but no activity

“Fuddy Duddy” Airworthy but no budget

Kermit’s airplane is nowhere near flying
Planes of Fame is seeking funding for the restoration of Piccadilly Lily
Tom Rielly is nearing completion of “Outhouse Mouse”
The restoration of “Desert Rat” is progressing slow but sure
The “Lacey Lady” is seeking funding

I’m no expert…but I do have the honor of being on the full time crew of “Nine O Nine” …we BS about B-17 activity all year

Cheers,

Jim Harley

To add to Mark’s list, there is also a B17E in airworthy condition in the US.It’s restoration was completed a couple of years ago although I’m not sure how much flying it’s done since. There was talk at one point of it going to a museum in Israel (!) but I don’t know how much truth there was in that.

The B17E was restored by the Whittington brothers if I remember right. Now with the Paul Allen collection in Washington State.

Killer B was the B17F restored by Boeing and it was a flyer but I don’t think the plan was for it to fly.

Another E model being restored very slowly in Illinois too

It was F-BEEA that was destroyed at Binbrook.
