Tuesday 15th October 1940 – The Fallen

41 squadron, Hornchurch

Spitfire X4178, Sgt P.D. Lloyd killed, shot down in a surprise attack, crashed in the Channel 09.00 hrs. Sgt Lloyd’s body was washed ashore near Kings Hall, Herne Bay, on the 27th October 1940.

46 squadron, Stapleford

Hurricane N2480, P/O P.S. Gunning killed, shot down in combat with Bf109s over the Thames Estuary, crashed and burned out in chalk pit at Little Thurrock, 13.05 hrs.

Hurricane V6550, F/S E.E. Williams missing, shot down in combat with Bf109s over the Thames Estuary, crashed in Gravesend 14.30 hrs.

92 squadron, Biggin Hill

Spitfire R6838, Sgt K.B. Parker killed, shot down in combat with Bf109s over the Thames Estuary, reputedly crashed in sea off Hoo Marina, 10.00 hrs. Sgt Parker is buried in Holland.

501 squadron, Kenley

Hurricane V6722, Sgt S.A. Fenemore killed, crashed at Postern Gate Farm, Godstone, following action with Bf109s over Redhill, 08.15 hrs.

605 squadron, Croydon

Hurricane N2546, F/L I.J. Muirhead killed, shot down in combat with Bf109s over Maidstone, possibly bailed out too low, crashed at Spekes Bottom, Darland, near Gillingham, 11.45 hrs.
