Here are three images taken on the actual day of the first post restoration flight at Duxford, in the late afternoon of the 13th January 2005.
The low sun was just perfect to illuminate the the underside of the wings and I got better results with my pocket ‘digi’ than my 35mm.
The latter shot is with the longish lens on the 35mm… and a little bit of help from PSP.
The sun was below the horizon by the time she landed.

The shutter speed is anoying when you freeze blades on a running engine because it’s too sunny!
I’m hoping to be able to cure that problem – or at least mitigate against it somewhat – with my Fuji S5000 by the simple expediant of having bought a cokin filter holder, which I have managed to fit to the front of my 1.5x Teleconverter. I should now be able to use ND filters (I’m getting a 4 and an 8) which should enable me to get much higher F numbers than the camera can manage normally. Trouble will be knowing which one to use for any given situation – or whether I should use both.
Unfortunately I no longer have a car, so I can’t get to anywhere except the deep southwest this year – and there are few airshows round here. 😡 🙁 😡
(Charitable help gratefully accepted 😉 )

That sunset shot is great. Why don’t I ever see that happen. I usually get kicked off the field before I even get the chance to see the sun set… 🙁

So apart from mega tele-photo shots, why do I need the Canon 10, 20, 350, 1 or whatever it is ‘D’? 🙂
Good question. Having used a Fuji A303 of 3.2 megapxels, bought in 2002 (i.e. before the dawnatime in digi terms) it beats the pants of a 35mm SLR and I cannot yet justify the cost of a big digibox.
Counts against small digiboxes – picture lag; no control over shutter speed; lens length; viewfinder/preview issues. The shutter speed is anoying when you freeze blades on a running engine because it’s too sunny! Have managed to use the digibox air-to-ground and air-to-air. It’s possible, but not reccomended.
You pays your money, and manages with wot you can afford. 😀

Well thanks Darren,
The problem for me is that the first two were taken with a tiddly little Canon IXUS v3 with a mere 3.2 Mega pixels, long since superseded twice over, with low light and no flash or tripod. I have produced creditable 10×8 prints from the file that I am delighted with and exceed the quality of my 35mm stuff. So apart from mega tele-photo shots, why do I need the Canon 10, 20, 350, 1 or whatever it is ‘D’? 🙂
…and it fits in my shirt top pocket and with 256Mb memory card will take over 200 high res shots with one battery change/charge.
Mark
The simple answer is that most digital cameras will give a good image, especially if it comes from a good brand stable. The shots from the IXUS are great. Im sure, given your level of published photography, I need not tell you that! 🙂

Nice!!

That last one, while a bit noisy, looks more like a very evocative painting than a photograph – great look.
Can I be cheeky and recommend you sharpen it (I use the unsharp mask in Paintshop Pro 7) and then clean up the noise with something like Neat Image?
RobAnt,
You can be cheeky. 🙂
I have now unsharped mask, as the first two digi images were, actually. I have re-submitted the latter, it but it hasn’t made much difference.
Where do I find ‘Neat image’?

Irish! Darn i thought she’d be from Chile or somewhere like that

She’s in her original Irish Air Corps scheme, and she’s being utilised as a trainer by HFL/ARCo, if memory serves correct.
Love that sunset shot – very reminiscent of Piece of Cake 🙂
