Dear All,
I was wondering if any members might be able to help me. I have been looking through a log book to a chap serving with 18 Squadron and on the 13th May 1942 he moves to Ayr for a short spell and states he is carrying out “SCHUIJTE EXERCISES” (possible schvijte?), and COMBINED OPERATIONS. I have no idea what these are, and he returns to the squadrons main base on the 29th May after two attemps to return failed due to the prot engine failing.
I was also wondering if anybody had any idea who was commanding B Flight in June 1942 and October/November 1942.
Any help would be great,
Johnnie

SCHUYT EXERCISE
Johnnie , further to my previous note on this subject , i can now add the following ,
Their was in indeed 3 SCHUYT EXERCISES that took place in MAY 1942 , sadly the third exercise was cancelled for what reason i do not know , also note the spelling as above is correct .
The whole thing was organised by COMBINED OPERATIONS for a fuller explantion of COMBINED OPS visit the Site already mentioned www.combinedops.com . a lot of the content on this site was provided by me .
very basically COMBINED OPERATIONS WAS ALL 3 SERVICE’S WORKING AS A SINGLE FIGHTING FORCE .
THE SCHUYT EXERCISES PROVIDED ,occasions for active co operation between the three service’s
The RAF sqd crews ,WERE GIVEN instruction in the aspects and processes of COMBINED OPERATIONS ,before taking part in the SCHUYT EXERCISE’S , sadly due to the CANCELLATION of the SCHUYT 3 EXERCISE the third batch of SQD CREWS MISSED THIER PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE .
i have a monthly progress report from COMBINED TRAINING CENTRE DUNDONALD FOR MAY 42 which mentions the exercise’s , but it does not state what the EXERCISE consisted off , if you want a copy of the report let me know of site and i will send you a copy
please may i also ask , if it would be possible to obtain a copy of the flying log of which you speak , just the pages relating to the EXERCISE ?

Many thanks for the replies. That would seem to fit in as he also mentions “combined operations” on one of the days he is up in Scotland.

There were at least 3 Schuyt exercises. You will find them explained here as well as some photographs of aircraft taking part.

schuitje
Dutch for CAR.
May be a clue.
Mark
Actually, ‘schuitje’ means:
– a little ship
– small basket for a balloon or swing
– a casting shape (‘bread’) for tin
– the spool of a sewing machine
There may be a link to an expression ‘schuitje varen’ (taking a trip) or ‘in hetzelfde schuitje zitten’ (everybody being in the same situation).
