F/LT G.E.B.Stoney. 501 Sqn. Killed.

Sgt P.K.Walley. 615 Sqn. Killed.

Today saw very heavy raids on Kenley and Biggin Hill. Manston, Croydon and West Malling were also attacked.
Air combats were at an intense level and losses for the day were:
Luftwaffe: 126 destroyed, 26 Probable, 45 Damaged with a further 8 falling to AA.
RAF: 22 with 12 pilots safe.

On the ground the casualties were
RAF 16 Killed 6 Wounded, Civilian 44 K 108 W.

The 2 x 501 Sqn. casulties (P/O Bland in P3208, SD-T)were of course from the 4 x 501 Sqn machines shot down in mere couple of minutes by 111./JG26’s Oberleutnant Gerhard Schopfel in one of the Battle’s more bizarre actions.

18th August 1940 – the hardest day indeed.
