1930's metal protection processes

I am no expert on this subject, but looking though some old documents about protecting a variety of metals, I have some questions.

In relation to cleaning, immersion in a “Zonax bath” is called for, what is Zonax?

Cadmium plating bath solutions is to be to specification D.T.D.904., anyone have a copy of this specification?

Parco P.10 process or Parco bath is referred to. Parco is now a brand name of Henkel. It is described as being a powder. Modern day Parco has a whole range of products. Is any one of these modern day products, the “classic” Parco product being referred to here?

Parkerising P.6. Process, what is this?

Vega et al, great explanations of some of these processes, thank you. I think DTD 904 is part of another batch of 1000’s of material standards recently digitized that will be uploaded in the next month or so.

I am sure some of these chemicals can melt your lungs…

Thank you all for replying.
I realise now that Zonax must be some form of coating as has been pointed out, as the requirement is to degrease in trichloroethylene first.

From what I understand DTD904 has been superseded by DEF-STAN 03/19 which can be found here:
ftp://ftp.iks-jena.de/mitarb/lutz/standards/dstan/03/019/00000200.pdf

It may also be useful to browse through QQ-P-416 which is the American specification for cadmium plating.

Not having seen DTD904 but having had experience of getting equipment cadmium plated (and also carrying out brush cadmium plating, which is qualified to QQ-P-416, to various specifications inc Dowty,Fokker, Boeing) most of the equipment used is the same and to a greater extent the vendor’s specifications are based upon the national specification with maybe different inspection criteria.

Hope that helps

Regards

Dave

A Zonax bath contains ZONATE Brass Salts which are a compounded of copper and zinc sodium cyanides, sodium sulphite and high grade sodium cyanides, combined in the correct proportions yield a brass deposits of rich golden yellow colour.

Parkerizing uses either Manganese phosphating or zinc phosphating and can be done using either a liquid or powder media. I’ve found ref to process P6 but as yet I’ve not located the details. Parco is a trade name for on of the Parkerzing media.
