1943 RAF airman awarded US Air Medal – info please.

While browsing through old newspaper articles at my local library I came across a brief entry for July 1943 – Flying Officer Duncan Wilson has been awarded the United States Air Medal. He was on duty in co-operation with the United States Air Force.

Can anyone tell me what sort of co-operation this may have been? In what circumstances were US war medals awarded to members of other air forces (and vice-versa) and was it fairly common practice? ( I can understand the Eagle Squadron sort of scenario but wouldn’t 1943 have been a bit late for that?)

Lastly, does anyone have any information on the award to F.O. Wilson?

Thank you
