I have been given access to a very nice 1944 newspaper, a few intresting storys about the war in europe some great photos,
but in fading pencil somebody has scribbled the following
“P-51 479th lost Southend Tuesday 12th December 1944”
Anyone know anymore about it?
All I can think of is the P51 cockpit & engine section that is on show in Clacton, but this did not crash near Southend.
Sadly I cant get the ok to scan the newspaper as it in a private collection I will keep trying but dont want to push the ower too and be stoped from viewing his collection.

Hello,
From the 479th FG history book I checked in, it seems the plane was P-51B 43-7157, coded J2*7, and flown by 2nd Lt Robert b. Hymans, who was listed MIA at the time, and whose remains were recoverd in 1997 (or 1998), 2 miles east of Shoebury Ness. He crashed during a training flight, cause unknown.
HTH,
Laurent
