We have been clearing out my aunties house, who died recently, and came across an album of photos showing my late uncle’s (died in 1976) trip to Holland back in 1948. He went with a neighbour who owned a Jaguar, which they took with them. I am sure you guys can tell me all about the plane, the airline and anything else that might be of interest. I have more if you like.

My uncle is the young lad on the left carrying the suitcase. My grandfather is the stout gentleman on the right. He didn’t go with them but was there to say goodbye.

Yes, standing just south of the corner with Prinsenstraat if I’m correct.
BTW: the label in your album (Lorjé, Arnhem) was from a well-known publisher and editing firm at the time, that also had an office supplies shop in Arnhem.

I think the bridge in pic 050 and 051 is the original Moerdijk bridge, which was heavily damaged by the Germans in 1944. In 1978 the bridge in the motorway was replaced by a new and wider one. Parts of the old bridge can still be found elsewhere in the Netherlands.

Pic 026 is at Hermeton-sur-Meuse in Belgium. The Sherman, a rare(ish) M4A3E2 Jumbo assault tank is now in the Brussels Army Museum.

Pic 037 is the “Rademarkt” and the “Oosterstraat” in Groningen, a city in the north of the Netherlands close to village I’m living. Some damage from the final days of the war, when the city was liberated by the Canadians, still visible in the background. The church tower is the Martini-toren; a well known landmark of the city.

I’d say that 038 is the approach to the Arnhem bridge but 050 and 051 is a different multi span bridge further North. In fact I think 050 and 051 may be 2 different bridges because although their structure looks similar there are significant differences

Ok. I’m back. I have dug the hard drive out of my broken laptop and got the rest of the photos of the holiday.
Just to recap. My uncle Alan went on holiday in Europe in 1949 with a neighbour and his Jag. If you can locate any of these following pics, that would be brill. I have also added a couple of interesting pics too (that you’d never locate). Enjoy.

I attach the back cover of the 1952 edition of Ian Allan’s Civil Aircraft Markings. Note it states Lympne to Le Touquet.

The thought had crossed my mind too and I see that you have also pre-empted by finding locations on Google Earth (where would we be without it?). Alas I scanned all the photos onto my laptop, and uploaded to Flickr all the ones you see here, but now the hard drive has stopped working before I had a chance to back-up. So I will have to scan them all again.
They are numbered in the order they were scanned straight from the album so they should be in the order that they visited the locations (that’s why I thought it strange at first that the photo of the planes was later in the book and not at the beginning with the others – see a previous post of mine).
I might do the same exercise with his slides from the 60’s.

Your relative’s photo of the fountain with the bulls looked familiar. They must have got around in Europe because the fountain is I believe the Gefion fountain in Copenhagen.
