1950's/60's Archive Part 24:Hawker Hunter

Here’s a group of Hunters at various airshows, a surprising number survive.

WP104/A Hunter F.5, 56 Sq. (Returned to HSA 1959 and scrapped):

XE597 Hunter F.6, special marks for C/O of 63 Sq. At Heathrow BoB Display (Yes really) 21-9-58. Converted to FGA.9 and flew until 1985. To 8874M at Halton, the nose survives in Bromsgrove:

XE606 Hunter F.6, AFDS. Later converted to F.6A, withdrawn for BDRT at Laarbruch, it was rescued by 20 Sq and survives at Cottesmore in 4 Sq marks:

Some great images there.

The picture of XG200 is especially interesting, as it’s one of a small number of ‘Black Arrows’ that went to 229 OCU at Chivenor after 111 gave up their Hunters.

They retained their black finish for a year or two, the only change being to repaint the the fuselage serial number in standard size and colour. They also had at least one ‘Blue Diamond’, XG159.
