Apologies for the poor image quality. These were passed on to me sometime ago and depict the flying display following on from a gliding competition held by the London Gliding Club at Dunstable Downs in 1967.

The Gunbus was damaged on landing. It was on final approach when the a person sitting near us on the track from the road to the bottom of the hill stood up. The pilot had to lift his wing to get over the person. This resulted in a heavy landing, which damaged one of the undercarrage struts.

Derek Piggot flew the Gunbus, at that time, I believe.

Buster,

They are my photos that have been copied from a CD that I sell. I don’t believe that you have my permission to put them on the net 🙁

Fascinating stuff. There is PA18 G-ARAM , my first solo machine when operated by Clacton Aero Club. It had a thump a while ago, but I imagine it is being mantled again.

Its Getting there 🙂

Thanks for the pictures BUSTER. I am especially interested as I was there, probably at only my second airshow following one at Shuttleworth the same year. A very impressionable little lad in shorts.
Strange what memories linger in your mind but what I do remember is one of the glider tugs landing and its tow rope being very close to some spectators nearby. Also the Turbulent G-APWP had a wooden handled wire brush attached to its tail skid, brisle side down, seems a bit odd but I am sure its what I saw.
And in the fog of my mind I seem to remember an air race involving the Tiger Moths and one of them clipped the roof of a Volkswagen camper van in the car park with a wheel, but its nearly 40 yars ago so may be wrong with that.
Lastly something had a JAP engine, possibly the Minor or Flea, that confused me for years, why anyone would use a Japanese engine.

Buster,

Many thanks for posting the link to these very interesting shots.

I went to this air display at Dunstable Downs in August 1967 and well remember the Vickers Gunbus put-putting about.

A Spitfire flew over during the display and I popped off a shot of it on a very basic 35mm camera to have but a small dot on the negative. It was my first sighting of MT818/G-AIDN the two Mk VIII two seater.

Mark
