20 Sqd in Malaya

Hi all

While 20 Sqd were in Malaya in the 1960`s would anyone have any information or photos on the use of Jet Provost T.4s that were used in the conflict.
I know XS221,223,224 were there. Also I assume that XS221 did not make it back because it crashed Feb 1966 (I assume while in Malaya), why did it crash?

regards

Colin,

The date of the accident should read 10 February 1966 and not 5 February 1966. The date shown in Cummings’ book is incorrect.

Colin,

XS221 crashed near Alor Star, Kedah, on 5 Feb 66. This aircraft, along with some other JPs was being used to test the feasability of operating the aeroplane in the Forward Air Control role.

Details of the crash as recorded in Colin Cummings ‘Lost to Service’ are:

“Aircraft was engaged on trials to judge the suitability of using the Jet Provost as an airborne Forward Air control aircraft. It was overflying the target area when it crashed into the trees and the pilot did not attempt to eject and was killed.”

The pilot is listed as Flt Lt Peter Sydney Loveday. He is buried in the Western Road Cemetary here on Penang.

I don’t know what the outcome of the trials were, nor how long they lasted.

BR,

Laurie.
