Just finished watching Top Gun for the umpteenth time and some things occured to me-
-This movie will be 20 years old next year
-The F-14, the ‘last of the cats’, will be retired from Naval service when the Carl Vinson returns from her current deployment
-Art Scholl died in a flat spin very much like the one depicted in the movie while filming this movie
I’m really gonna miss the F-14 when it goes, the end of the Grumman fighter era which started back in the 1930’s and ran all the way up to 2005….shall we avoid the paperwork and just classify the F-14 as a warbird now?

I remember how excited I was at 16 to be going to the movies to watch it for the first time. Today it looks corny and cheesy but the flying scenes are still spectacular.
IIRC – the Navy let the production film 1 missle firing from an F-14 and they used it a few times (reversing etc).
Now, the F-14 ?
A beautiful beast and definitely a classic warbird in years to come.
Thanks for trip down memory lane, Corsair166b 🙂
