Seeing the 2008 anniversaries thread rising to the surface again made me wonder….

What we will be celebrating or remembering come 2009?

100 years young

Next year sees the centenary of Grange Airfield Gosport. At the same time the first Naval aviators took to the air so the FAA will have something to celebrate. Then lets not forget the Sea King having been in service with UK forces for 40 years 🙂

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned the Fairey Gannet and Avro Shackleton, 60th!
1949 was definately one of the most important years in British aviation regards new aircraft, the SBAC show of that year was incredible.

Other aircraft to first fly in 1949 are, Bristol Brabazon, and the Avro 707, vital to the Vulcan development programme.

Other important round figured anniversaries;
Handley Page Halifax, Short Stirling, Avro Manchester, and B-24 Liberator (seems far more modern than previous two!) 70th.
Vickers Vanguard 50th.
Boeing 747 and Concorde 40th.

Rlangham, it dosen’t matter how pedantic you are, WWI is generally known as 1914-18 war and the memorials I have seen say 1918, ceasation of hostilities was in 1918.

The AW 650 Argosy is 50 in 2009.

The first aircraft, G-AOZZ, flew from Bitteswell on 8th January. and it is preserved at the Yankee Air Museum, Michigan, USA.

The second, G-APRL, only a few weeks later on 14th March and is at MAM.

100 Years of Aviation In The Borough Southend!

1909: Leigh-on-Sea V.F Forbes & A.J. Arnold built their unconventional single seat tractor monoplane. Successful flights were made of a scaled down model. The real aircraft was made from bamboo the aircraft was fitted with a water cooled car engine it was reported that the aircraft made a few hops but never actually flew.

or

99 Years since the first offical flight in Southend on Sea

Saturday 9th July 1910: The first true aeroplane to fly from Southend, Local aviator George Barnes made the first ever recorded flight from the borough. The flight was not from the site that has today become the town’s airport, but Roots Hall Home of Southend United football Club. More than 2000 people some of whom gathered at the top of St Mary’s church watched the flight, which was made in a Bleriot. The event was hampered by strong winds which affected the light aircraft a number of attempts were made but due the winds it was decided not to try to fly the aircraft. When the winds drop in the evening the aircraft was rolled into position and fired up its engine it got 50 yards off the ground and flew in to the next field before coming back down. The event was open to spectators who had to pay an entry fee to get in to the Football clubs ground, but because of the low height of the fence many people simply jumped over the fence. , Sadly a few weeks later Barnes was seriously injured when attempting another flight this time flying at Folkestone.

Isnt that this year:confused: 1918-2008;)

40th anniversary of the 1st flight of BE2 replica G-AWYI, “Biggles Biplane”
hopefully she will fly again next year.

All depends how pedantic you want to be – could argue it’s when the Treaty of Versaille was signed in 1919 (hence why a lot of war memorials say 1914-19), or even when the Allies pulled out of Constantinople in 1923

Also, 90 years of the British North Russian Relief Force which arrived in May 1919 to cover the Allied retreat from the involvement in the Russian civil war, pretty certain aircraft were used in the campaign.
