Thinking ahead here………… and planning a Family Holiday in the Peak district, but was wondering if anyone knows anything about any proposed dates for the BBMF Lanc flying over the Derwent Dam ?

Yes, Eyebrook (after the stream that fed it), but it was often referred to by the nearby town name of Uppingham (where ‘Dambusters 2’ scriptwriter Stephen Fry went to school – as did actor Richard Thorp, Henry Maudslay in the original film). Similarly, Guy Gibson referred to Abberton reservoir as ‘Colchester Lake’ in Enemy Coast Ahead.

The Dambusters blog suggests 16 May for the Derwent dam, but says earlier suggestions about other reservoirs (Uppingham and Abberton?) are not confirmed.
Don’t you mean Eyebrook reservoir, that was used a lot for training?

I take your point. So presumably various individuals/bodies will have requested flypasts at the various dams involved in the trials.
Possibly that will be the case, but whether or not βbidsβ have been submitted I donβt know.
I have been on the periphery of the events that are being planned for Lincolnshire, which I understand are coming along really well; certainly the refurbished facilities in the RAF Scampton Museum looked really good last month! π
The flypasts were also discussed in this thread http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=119637&highlight=Rutland

Uppingham? Do you mean Empingham renamed Rutland Water? If so it didn’t exist in 1943….

I know β but thatβs not how it tends to work; hence the detail in my post trying to indicate how it does work to secure a flypast.
Now if for example the Barnes Wallis Trust was planning something at Reculver, they might have requested a BBMF Lancaster flypast β but that comment doesnβt imply they have.
Newark Air Museum (NAM) has a practice Upkeep Mine (ex-Reculver) on loan from the MOD via the Barnes Wallis Trust and NAM hopes to commemorate its Dambusters connections next May β through its various related exhibits. π

I inferred that it was the Flight which was planning the Dam Buster events not applicants for the various venues. Hence my point about Reculver and Manston and the significant part those locations played in the trials of Upkeep.

There is a key question in all of this as referenced in #4 – has anyone applied for a flypast / flypasts / displays?
I have submitted several applications for 2013 events but not for that part of Kent! π

That’s right – one or more elements of the BBMF have done flypasts at Tankerton for several years – and they have appeared at the now defunct Margate Show in the past. So they are no strangers to East Kent.

Good call CharlieHunt I for one would love to see the Lancaster in its full Glory doing a flyover Reculver, not sure of the last appearance it made there as i have a nice photo of its last appearance flying above the Castle. Would anyone have any idea when this may of been?

There is a listing for a new air show to be held on the Manston airfield on June 22 next year. It would be good to see the Lancaster at Manston then.
Exactly – the first Manston show for about 20 years I think, excepting the small Spitfire Events. Hopefully the BBMF will send the trio….:)

By complete chance PA474 flew down the Derwent when I was dog walking there a few weeks ago. It’s a very special experience, and would wholeheartedly recommend anyone to make the journey – no matter how far, it’s worth it!

This may give some insight but no specific dates http://www.lancaster-association.co.uk/NewsArticle.aspx?newsid=79 π
Although the scheme is of an opertional aircraft not a trials aircraft it would be fitting to see a flypast at Reculver and Manston.

The bids for RAF participation at events had to be in by the end of September.
RAF Events won’t usually issue their allocation letters until Spring – Usually March/April.

Dates are usually not released until just before the season starts.
Bookings for 2013 will still be coming in, and then there’s the logisitcs of planning it all.
