I’m starting this topic as a general plea to all members of this forum in response to recent events.
I must confess that I mainly read the posts on this forum rather than post myself and over the years have found it a great source of information re my interests in aviation and model making. Posts like the Duxford visit site and the transformation of the Victor repaint have me visiting every day.
The down side is the rubbish and drivel that is contained in some postings ie Burmese spitfires, IWM Spitfire and others.
Yes I know that this is a public forum and the whole idea of a forum is to be able to post and discuss with other like minded people and that yes I know that it is my choice to open and read a post but when there is a thread like the two mentioned above that have been of interest but then go way off line or repeat the same old rubbish rather than containing anything of any interest it really becomes a bit of a joke (not in a funny way).
The other thing is that we are not the only people that read this forum. Owners and operators of some of the aircraft that we love to see in the air/museums around the country also read it, take the people at TFC with the “paint stripper for spitfire” box for example which most people took it in the manner it was intended but others took it the other way. Also there are people that have given us info about projects etched in the past that no longer do so but due to comments made feel “why bother” due to the reaction from some. Another example was the temporary ban of a number of members due to the threat of legal action of some sort, again that was another thread that should of consisted of a few posts but kept repeating itself.
I am all for free speech and expressing one’s views but perhaps a couple of the advertising spaces should be given to a couple of posters in the vain of the wartime ones “careless posts cost members” and “is your post really necessary”.
Also could the I know something that you don’t know and the I heard from my third cousins pet dog brigade also think before posting.
I would like to finish my rant with a general thanks to all the operators, owners and custodians of the many varied and great aircraft that we are able to enjoy across the country.

Firebex, Shirley not you? A grn man?? I would have thought that North Yorkshire would have only produced Bluemen due clder temps ( unless they’ve been down to Wales and playing with the Wode).
Anyway chaps and chapesses, Hope your Christmas headaches have now gone “oop t’ chimbly” and that the New Year will bring us all a bit of Peace and satisfaction and lots of “interesting” posts.
A special thanks to the Webmaster and all his little Mods for your forbearance and good work, it is appreciated.

I was being circumspect so as not to generate yet more threats of lawyers.

Remember that the threats of legal actions came about when light was thrown onto some actions that were potentially dubious.
*Potentially dubious*?? That’s where the bar is set for threats of lawsuits?

For example the thread relating to the band members,
I’ve been here a while but I don’t remember that thread.
If we are on the subject of bands though, I would imagine that Moggy would quite like to be associated with a WAAF band in some way.
Moggy, just let let that fervid imagination of yours play with the idea of four ranks of four perfect Susannah York lookalikes. Tunics as crisp as matrons apron, not a wisp of hair touching a collar and not a wrinkled stocking to be seen–all for your delectation.
Happy new year mate–and I still owe you a beer.
Andy.
PS. You will have guessed by now that I don’t take any of this in the least bit seriously.

I Joined this forum because its better than another i was with, who’s posters were more interested in criticizing posts than reading their comments, spell checks only work if you know you have spelled a word wrong.
As you just demonstrated with who’s instead of whose 😉 😉 😀
We try not to criticise people here for honest attempts at spelling and grammar that miss technically. As long as it’s understandable we’ll live with it. But the mods do tidy up the headlines to make sure they are instantly readable, and we come down hard on ‘txt spk’

stmterrace, it’s quite simple really, those who contribute shape the site. You put nothing in, so you can’t realistically expect it to reflect your interests unless it’s purely by chance.

Its a good Forum …& some people are Aviation purists —I for one didnt join to browse dusty old tombes in a basement …
As a member on other forums —what is needed is a sense of humour , a basic interest in the subject , respect for other members postings with a small smattering of sarcasm. . However what is guaranteed to hiss me ( a maybe others off ) is long serving members , who wrongfully think this is THEIR Forum !! who are so far up their own bums , that they will wake up one morning wearing themselves as a top hat !!
Happy New Year !!!

I like the forum as it is. As many others have said its the variety of threads and posts that keeps it interesting. It’s not solely an archive or sterile environment for academic or technical discussion but a forum for people with a shared interest to enjoy themselves. Most threads are informative, some inspiring others just a plain laugh. I must confess to getting a bit of a headache while reading a few threads but that’s the joy of having ones own mind, when you’ve had enough move on.
We already live in an age of political correctness that means that free speech is effectively a thing of the past. Little good seems to come from increased levels of censorship, if it isn’t broken don’t fix it.
Oh and for reference the autocorrect only comes into play if your spelling is incorrect in the first place or your fingers are so big that they just mash the keyboard 🙂

Sorry forgot to add that I apologise if there are any spelling or grammar errors in my post as trying to write the postings on an iPhone and kindle and both have an odd auto correct system.
That’s no excuse!!:rolleyes:I certainly enjoyed the comments about the “band” members! I wondered which band the three of us were supposed to be members of…..:D

“the Saunderses and Arnolds of this world were God-like and certainly not approachable”.
Thank god thats changed then…….(sorry is that not serious enough for this forum?)
By: Beermat - 29th December 2012 at 15:17
I can only speak for myself. When I was younger, in pre-internet days, I used to buy FlyPast every month and two things seemed certain – I was a weird kid being interested in this stuff, and the Saunderses and Arnolds of this world were God-like and certainly not approachable.
This forum means that like-minded people can talk about what interests them whether they are published historians or that aeroplane-obsessed kid a lot of us were – or somewhere in between.
This in turn means that there will be, in an open platform for free speech like this, some comments that seem trite, naive, or even drivel. Not all of this from ‘outsiders’ either!
It also means that fresh ideas, viewpoints and voices enter the mix, keeping things in our little world fresh, and – pertinently – honest.
